Receiving some of the worst news you’ll ever hear in your life really sucks. But I’m not giving up, and neither is my dog. The final diagnosis is Wobbler Syndrome which the specialist originally thought was a long shot but upon looking over the MRI results, she concludes that this is Kloud’s diagnosis and that he’s probably had it most of his life and just finally reached a point where walking is a problem.
While I’m sure this specialist knows what she’s looking at, she’s only given us two options for Kloud and surgery isn’t one of them. While wobblers is progressive and incurable, its not entirely inoperable or untreatable depending on the severity of the condition. My heart fell into my stomach after the phone call today and mom and I already discussed what we wanted to do long beforehand. We’re waiting for the vet’s full report on him on paper and we are going to be getting a second opinion from another vet specialist and hopefully discuss options. To put a topper on everything, Kloud’s line has no history of wobblers and to date it has never been seen in the breed (another reason a second opinion couldn’t hurt).
If this is in fact, Wobblers, there are several other options ranging from acupuncture and steroids to possible surgeries— even a new operation that actually replaces multiple affected parts of the spine with artificial discs. He’s in good spirits regardless of his condition and I know in my gut that this isn’t the end of the road for him. We’re not done until we’ve researched every possible outlet for him or until he tells us otherwise and gives us a sign that he’s done. But as it stands right now, he doesn’t appear to be giving up and is looking forward to his next meal of home-cooked chicken.
We’re gonna be on the road in 30 minutes. The other thing that has me incredibly worried is if him being under for so long causes lack of oxygen to the brain.. that happened one of my family’s older dogs under anesthesia and when she came out of it she was never quite the same :(It was like a piece of her was missing, she never functioned again normally after that.
The wait while he is under is going to feel like an eternity.
